    2. Make ready 1 tsp urad dal
    3. Prepare 1 tsp chana dal
    4. Take 1 tsp mustard seeds

    6. Make ready 2-3 dry red chillies
    7. Take 2 green chillies
    8. Make ready 1 Small piece of ginger

    10. Prepare 4-5 tsp Oil

    12. Take as per taste Salt

    Upma is a tasty hot breakfast dish originally from South India but is now popular all over. Add mustard seeds, channa dal, urad dal and onion. Add semolina and saute until light brown. Add remaining ingredients, except coconut, and mix well.


    Instructions

    Instructions to make Semolina upma:

    1. Add oil in a pan,when it is hot add mustard seeds,urad dal,chanadal,curry leaves, cashews,dry chilli.
    2. Then add onion sliced,green chilli, ginger.Sort till onions are transparent. Then add grated fresh coconut which enhances south Indian flavour.Sort for a while.Then add semolina sort till it is aromatic. Then add veg such as green peas,carrot.
    3. To this add boiling water with salt required.Also at this stage add ghee which makes uppuma soft.Water level should be just just above the mixture. If you prefer little loose uppuma add more water. Close the lid and allow to cook for some time. Stir in between. When upma turns to soft texture take it and serve.

    This upma needs a slightly grainy variety of rawa to be used. Not the Bombay Sooji variety which is extremely fine and used for coating. Semiya upma recipe - one of the everyday breakfasts of south India. Skip this step if using roasted semiya.
